When to Consider a Facelift
Could Your Looks Use a Lift?
Have you ever caught a glimpse of your reflection and wondered when you started looking more like your mom or dad than yourself? Through a combination of heredity, overall health, gravity, sun exposure and personal habits, as you age the skin on your face and neck will begin to lose elasticity and muscle tone.
If you’re bothered by softening facial features, visible forehead creases, deepening crow’s feet or a loosening jaw line, you may have considered restorative cosmetic surgery to reduce these telltale signs of aging and regain a more youthful image.
A facelift — also called a rhytidectomy — won’t alter your natural features, but it will remarkably enhance your overall appearance by reducing the visible signs of aging on your face, jowl and neckline. Dr. Ernest B. Robinson is a Board Certified Specialist with more than 20 years of experience performing individualized facelifts for patients from Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Hills and Santa Ana and beyond.
01Consultation
Communicating Your Goals for This Procedure
As with any cosmetic surgery, the success of your facelift will depend greatly on realistic expectations of the surgical outcome. During your consultation, Dr. Robinson will examine your face, take a thorough medical history and explore your motivation for considering a facelift. He’ll describe the procedure in detail, discuss the surgical limitations and answer any questions you may have.
Thorough medical history review and facial examination
Honest discussion about realistic surgical outcomes
Discussion of complementary procedures for facial balance
Exploration of non-surgical enhancement options
A personalized treatment plan tailored to your individual goals
Surgical Techniques to Achieve Your Desired Outcome
1
Anesthesia & Preparation
Dr. Robinson performs facelifts at Pacific Hills Surgery Center using general anesthesia, ensuring your complete comfort throughout the procedure.
2
Camouflaged Incisions
He begins by making well-camouflaged incisions hidden behind your ears and in the natural creases of your skin, which he lifts to tighten and reposition the underlying muscle and connective tissue.
3
Neck Refinement (if needed)
He also may make a tiny incision under your chin to lift an aging neck, addressing excess skin laxity and banding in the neck area.
4
Fat Removal & Skin Re-draping
Dr. Robinson removes any accumulated fat, re-drapes the skin, and trims any excess before closing the incisions with ultrafine sutures. A thin drainage tube may be inserted to remove excess fluid.
5
Dressing & Completion
A protective dressing is applied to minimize bruising and swelling. The entire process takes from three to five hours, depending on the extent of surgery and whether additional procedures are performed.
03Recovery
Recuperating After Your Facelift
You’ll be discharged a few hours after this relatively painless procedure with medication to treat mild discomfort and instructions to elevate your head and apply cold compresses. It’s important to have someone assist in your care for the first few days; if you’re away from home, our staff can help arrange aftercare.
Day 1–2
Discharged with medication for mild discomfort. Rest with head elevated; apply cold compresses. Drainage tube removed if used.
Day 5–7
Stitches removed within approximately one week. Noticeable reduction in bruising and swelling begins.
Week 1–2
Most swelling and bruising subsides. Cleared to return to work and resume normal social activities.
After about a week the majority of swelling and bruising subsides and your face takes on a more rested, youthful appearance. The incisions — concealed within your hairline, the natural contours of your face and behind your ears — fade away, and any residual swelling disappears after about six months.
More rested and youthful facial appearance
Tighter jawline and reduced jowling
Smoother, more defined neckline
Incisions concealed within the natural hairline and creases
Long-lasting, natural-looking results visible by 6 months
Renewed confidence and improved personal outlook
