Does your chin stick out too far — or not far enough? Chin surgery can bring balance and proportion to your profile and boost your confidence.
When to Consider Chin Surgery
Balance & Proportion for Your Profile
Your chin is one of your most distinctive facial features. If yours seems to disappear into your neck or is out of proportion with your forehead, cheeks and nose, chin augmentation or reduction surgery can greatly improve your appearance.
Chin surgery — also known as mentoplasty — is a relatively straightforward procedure that can significantly enhance your facial structure and increase your self-confidence. Dr. Robinson can strengthen your profile by correcting a weak chin or reducing one that appears too prominent, by reshaping the chin bones, moving them forward, or using implants.
Dr. Ernest B. Robinson is a Board Certified Specialist with more than 20 years of experience performing cosmetic and corrective mentoplasty for patients from Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Hills and Santa Ana and beyond.
01Consultation
Communicating Your Goals for This Procedure
During your consultation, Dr. Robinson will explain how redefining your lower jaw will give your face balance and symmetry. He’ll take your complete medical history and examine your facial structure to determine how to create a new jawline that enhances your natural features, discuss realistic expectations, explain how the surgery is performed, and answer any questions you may have.

Chin surgery can be a stand-alone treatment, but to achieve natural-looking results Dr. Robinson’s patients often combine it with other procedures, such as nose reshaping or facial liposuction.
02Surgical Technique
Surgical Techniques to Achieve Your Desired Outcome
1
Anesthesia & Duration
Performed at the Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery office or Pacific Hills Surgery Center using local or general anesthesia. Surgery can take from one to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.
2
Augmentation — Creating the Pocket
For chin implant surgery, Dr. Robinson makes an incision inside your mouth or in the natural crease line under your chin, then gently stretches the tissue in front of your chin bone and under the muscle to create space for the implant.
3
Augmentation — Placing the Implant
He positions the implant, secures it to the bone with dissolvable sutures, and closes the incision with stitches. Implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your individual facial structure.
4
Reduction & Reshaping
If reducing or reshaping your chin, Dr. Robinson makes an incision inside your mouth along your lower gum, repositions the bones into the desired position, secures them, and closes the incision.
Dr. Robinson uses a natural-feeling chin implant material developed more than 50 years ago that is biocompatible with your body’s tissue — firm, flexible and infection resistant.
03Recovery
Recuperating After Your Chin Surgery
Dr. Robinson will apply a dressing or bandages that you’ll wear for two to three days. It’s important to have someone stay with you to assist in your care for the first few days; if you’re away from home, our staff can help arrange aftercare.
First 24–48 Hours
Mild swelling, bruising or discomfort is normal — treated with mild pain medication. Chewing is limited and you’ll be on a soft-food diet for the first day or two.
Day 2–3
Dressing or bandages worn for two to three days. Many patients feel up to resuming normal activities within a few days.
Week 1–2
Stitches removed at a follow-up appointment. Average recovery following chin surgery is less than a week.
Week 4–6
Your newly refined jawline fully emerges as the swelling subsides, revealing the final structural balance.
04Results
Expected Results from This Procedure
Chin implant or reduction surgery creates structural balance in your face, enhancing your appearance in a remarkable way. You’ll notice the initial outcome almost immediately, but your newly refined jawline won’t fully emerge until the swelling subsides — usually within four to six weeks. Incisions inside your mouth leave no visible scarring; an under-chin incision, if used, fades and becomes imperceptible over time when properly cared for and protected from the sun.
