Injectable dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane are the most commonly used methods of lip enhancement, or lip augmentation. The most common fillers available are products that contain hyaluronic acid or similar ingredients. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human body and, in hyaluronic acid fillers, it also increases the volume and plumpness of your lips.
There was a time when collagen was the most popular dermal filler, but it is far less common now because today’s fillers are considerably safer and give you longer-lasting results. Other lip enhancement methods include fat injections and lip implants, but results vary and those methods come with a greater risk for side effects – unlike today’s hyaluronic acid fillers.
Longer-lasting, effective hyaluronic acid fillers
The effects of hyaluronic acid fillers typically last about six months. Over time, your body naturally absorbs the filler material and your lips gradually shrink back to where they started – unless you have follow-up treatments. Hyaluronic acid fillers can improve the appearance of your lips by adding:
- A more sensuous shape
- Firmer structure
- Greater volume
- Youthful plumpness, poutiness
There are several hyaluronic acid fillers currently available. Among them are Restylane®, Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, Juvéderm® Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Kybella®. They are all injected the same way and offer similar results. Some even contain lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic.

Typically, there is less bruising and swelling when compared to other types of dermal fillers.
Results typically last up to about six months, but they are not permanent. To maintain your full lips, you will need follow-up treatments about every five to six months.
- Allergic reactions unlikely
Hyaluronic acid fillers are made from substances similar to those occurring naturally in the human body, so they are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Be sure to tell Dr. Robinson if you are allergic to lidocaine before treatment since lidocaine is used in some dermal fillers as a local anesthetic.
A Quick Procedure in Dr. Robinson’s Office
Injectable lip augmentation is performed quickly in our office, typically with very little downtime. After your dermal filler treatment, you may use ice to ease any discomfort and reduce swelling. Avoid applying any firm pressure on the treatment area until you have healed, and avoid using lipstick or ChapStick® immediately after the procedure. It’s likely that you will notice the difference in your lips right away. And your lips will feel natural after they have healed.

What to Expect After Surgery
- The Procedure: Typically performed in-office under local anesthesia. The procedure takes about 45–60 minutes.
- Recovery: Mild swelling and bruising can be expected for the first few days. Cold compresses and elevation help reduce discomfort.
- Sutures: Typically removed within 5–7 days.
- Healing Time: Most patients resume light activity within a few days and can wear makeup to conceal the incision (which is hidden under the base of the nose) after one week. Final results reveal a refreshed, youthful lip contour in just a few weeks.
